Plummers Lodges

There are many ways to see the mountains, rivers, and wildlife in Alaska. Some take a tour bus, some visit Alaska to fish on their own and participate in the many roadside outdoor activities that this state has to offer. There are, however, a few who wish to actually experience the Alaskan Wilderness or the world-class sport fishing in an authentic and still undisturbed country.

Thousands come to Alaska each year to enjoy this great wilderness and its sportfishing. Many of those folks will visit Kenai Peninsula and the Anchorage area fisheries. The term “combat fishing” elbow-to-elbow was coined from people’s experiences in these areas. Alaska is a huge state with immense wilderness and world-class sportfishing found throughout the state. We invite you to step off the beaten path and experience Alaska’s wilderness without crowds! On most of our trips, you will see very few, if any, other people!

Many of our trips offer road accessibility, thus eliminating the cost of expensive bush plane or charter flights. But don’t worry! This doesn’t mean crowds! It means affordability and intimate wilderness experiences without having to pay more than you should. These trips include National Wild and Scenic Rivers, which have been designated for their scenic and/or exceptional wildlife value (including world class sportfishing opportunities).

We are unlike any other guiding operations which are managed by seasonal residents. Alaska Fishing & Raft Adventures employs guides who reside year-round in Alaska. This philosophy provides our guests with the most knowledgeable guides in the industry. In addition, by employing only those with the best people skills, we assure that you will always have an exciting and memorable time.

Guests participating in our Gulkana river adventure will have the opportunity to catch King and Sockeye Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling, and Lake Trout. Whether you would like to use a spinner rod or catch your fish on the fly, we have gear and instruction for each. Our most popular adventure tours for the spectacular Gulkana River are 4 night / 5 day trips which include round-trip transportation from Fairbanks, all necessary fishing and camping gear, all meals while on the river, guide(s), and fish preparation (except freezing and shipping). Many guests wish to add 1 or 2 days to their Gulkana adventure and if that is the case we can certainly accommodate you.

As a National Wild and Scenic River the Gulkana can be enjoyed by fishermen and non-fishermen alike. It offers a great wilderness experience for folks of all ages! This scenic float trip covers almost 50 miles of river. After crossing Paxson Lake on the south side of the Alaska Range, the first 3 miles are shallow and rock class II rapids. At the confluence of the Middle Fork, the river begins meandering 15 miles through spruce forests and rolling hills home to moose, black and grizzly bear, caribou, beaver, eagles, and waterfowl. At river mile 18, a canyon begins as we approach the Canyon Rapids, commonly known as The Falls. A short, well maintained portage allows us to transport some gear around the Class III-IV rapids. The next eight miles are rocky with fast Class II water and the last 18 miles are generally Class I waters. In this lower section, it is not uncommon to see as many as 75 bald eagles perched in the spruce and poplar trees lining the river.

King Salmon Adventures - Flowing south out of the massive Alaska Range is the Wild and Scenic Gulkana River, home to Interior Alaska’s most famous King and Sockeye Salmon fishery! Guests can experience the power of the mighty King Salmon on either spin or fly-fishing gear. These fish average 25-35 pounds of pure excitement! Our Gulkana King Salmon Adventures get you away from the crowds and into the fish! Beginning in early June and ending July 19, we are able to offer only a few King Salmon Adventures each season and group size is limited, so advance reservations are necessary to secure your dates with the Gulkana Kings.

Rainbow Round-up - Late summer and fall fishing on the Gulkana is not to be missed! Our Rainbow Round-up on the Gulkana is one of Alaska’s best kept secrets in terms of quality rainbow fishing and lack of crowds! The best fishing for Trophy Rainbow Trout is late July through September with the biggest ‘Bows caught from mid- August through September. Rainbows over 20 inches are common and some reach sizes over 30 inches!! The thousands of spawning King and Sockeye Salmon have brought these large Rainbows and Arctic Grayling in for the action. Most of the action is from drift fishing flies in egg or leach patters over productive water. Aside from the huge Rainbows and Arctic Grayling, Sockeye Salmon are still in the river and are in great fighting condition and other boaters are rarely seen. Bald eagles are abundant and the Nelchina Caribou Herd has begun its annual migration through this country. The Fall colors provide an impressive backdrop for photos with your trophy Bows while the cool air has brought some relief from the long hours of the midnight sun. if you don’t want crowds, but you do want great fishing, come see us for our Rainbow Round-up in late August and September.
