Blackfish Lodge, founded in 1989, is a charming boat-in or fly-in floating lodge located near the northeast coast of Vancouver Island (see map), about 200 miles (350 kilometers) northwest of Vancouver, BC in Canada. When you reserve your guided fishing trip with us, we offer you both unlimited fishing time and guaranteed exclusive use of the lodge for parties of six. Personal service is assured by the limited number of guests that we take. Individuals or small groups of guests, business groups, and families are welcomed. Your stay at Blackfish Lodge can be tailored to your interests and schedule. Chris and Hannah Bennett, your congenial hosts and owners, are year-round residents of the lodge. You’ll be treated to great food and hospitality during your visit. Many people are curious about when is the best time to come to Blackfish Lodge. The answer is that it depends on what you’d like to do. Click here for a description of our season.

Fly Fishing - So whether you are fly fishing for trout, salmon, or steelhead in a secluded BC river, lake, or stream, fishing for trophy salmon in the protected waters of the surrounding islands, sightseeing, or going whale-watching or bird-watching, Blackfish Lodge’s dedication and 14+ years experience ensure that you will have a truly enjoyable and successful stay. For quality wilderness angling, there’s no better place for fishing, nature watching, and congeniality than Blackfish Lodge.

Our 100% catch and release streams, lakes, and rivers are, indeed, some of the most beautiful, productive, and unpressured waters you’ve never heard of. Our truck can take you to some fine lakes and streams on nearby Gilford Island. Fish small streams or bigger water, dry flies, or wet. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find yourself hooking summer or winter run steelhead, cutthroat trout, dolly varden char, a few rainbow trout, and chinook, silver, and pink salmon.

Saltwater Fishing - Millions of migrating salmon go through the bottleneck of British Columbia’s Inside Passage, and Blackfish Lodge is situated to take full advantage of the presence of these fish. Trolling is the method of choice, and guests at Blackfish Lodge consistently catch more and bigger fish than any other lodge in the area. Our area is also home to some excellent halibut fishing—some spots are within just a few minutes of the lodge. Our largest halibut of the 2002 season topped out at 149 pounds!

Generally, the catch limit has been four salmon per day of which two may be chinook. We encourage our guests to practice conservation and keep only as many fish as you’ll want to eat. You are allowed to take home a total of eight salmon per person. Of these eight salmon, you can keep a maximum of four chinook. The other four can be a combination of any other of the species. In order to protect some British Columbia stocks, wild coho have been strictly catch and release for the past three years (retention of hatchery fish will again be allowed in 2003). Currently, the halibut limit is three fish per guest.

Spinning and Casting - All of our streams, rivers, and lakes are fishable using spinning and/or casting gear. Steelhead, trout, salmon, and dolly varden all respond extremely well to a cast lure. Equipped with single, barbless hooks, different varieties of spinners and spoons can provide incredible action. Our freshwater fishing spots are located from a 20-50 minute boat ride from the lodge. Some of these spots require short to moderate hikes, so guests should have the appropriate physical mobility necessary to reach these locations. Blackfish Lodge is licensed and insured for all freshwater fishing.

Wakeman River - We highly recommend the optional full day rafting trip down the Wakeman River. Designated as Classified Waters by the B.C. government, we are one of only two lodges authorized to fish the spectacularly beautiful and legendary Wakeman. Rarely will you see other anglers. Clear in the spring and turning to a striking jade green color in the mid and late summer, the Wakeman has very often been noted as the highlight of our guests´ trip. Your Wakeman day starts off with a 50 minute boat ride up lovely Kingcome Inlet. Then, a short truck ride up the river to your put-in spot. Starting off in a small tributary, you and your guide will raft and fish your way down the river through innumerable pools and runs. After hooking your fill of steelhead, salmon, trout, or dollies, (depending on the season) you’ll come back to the lodge for another great dinner.

The Lodge - As you first land at the generous dock and walk into the lodge, you’ll be greeted by the lodge’s lovely scent of cedar. Lunch will be on the table shortly. At the end of your day of fishing, you’ll come home to a genuine B.C. floathouse, and to the relaxed and personal atmosphere that defines Blackfish Lodge. The fireplace will warm, a glass of your favorite beverage will relax you, and our fine and sumptuous food will satisfy. You’ll drift off to sleep hearing the sound of water lapping outside your window---quietly aware that tomorrow will bring new angling delights.

Using red and yellow cedar from the nearby forests, Chris and local craftsmen milled the lumber on site and worked together to build Blackfish Lodge. The lodge is cozily heated by a woodstove and has a generator to provide electricity (we turn it off for sleeping). Each private room has two beds and its own shower-equipped bathroom. There is also a kitchen, dining area, and a modest living room, all with spectacular views. We have an eclectic collection of CD’s, and an upright piano for those who like music during their time at the lodge. You’re also welcome to bring your own music (CD or cassette tapes) to set the mood of your trip. Finally, the lodge is wheelchair accessible.
