BRIDGER OUTFITTERS-a family tradition for over 90 years; is owned by Dave Warwood. His great grandfather was an outfitter who took trips into Yellowstone Park at the turn of the century; for fishing, photography, and sightseeing. Dave grew up on the family ranch his great grandfather settled in 1882, hearing stories from his grandmother who was camp cook on her father's expeditions. Dave has operated this business since 1980; for hunts, summer cattle drives, and backcountry fishing trips. These all run from the ranch and the Lightning Creek camps. The Lighting Creek camp is used to hunt the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, bordering the NW corner of Yellowstone Park. This area is excellent for elk hunting, both archery and rifle season. The endless supply of Yellowstone elk makes this an exceptional trophy area for Record Book Bulls! The area is hunted for 5 miles in all directions from camp; about 100 sections or 64,000 acres; with a limited number of hunters, to insure you get a quality hunt. There is very little outside hunting pressure due to the accessibility (several miles through a locked gate, on a private road where you can park your four wheel drive, and then an hour horseback to the tent camp). Dave feels low pressure hunting techniques are important to insure Trophy Class Bulls stay in the area. Opportunities for mature bulls(340 B&C or better) is very good. It's very unusual to not get chances at good bulls here; the only time some of these 8 or 9 year old bulls are hunted is when they leave Yellowstone.
A backcountry horse pack-in camp at the edge the Lee Metcalf Wilderness; outside the NW corner of Yellowstone Park. If your main interest is a good backcountry Elk hunt, we have what you're looking for. As you may know, this area has the highest bull to cow ratio of anywhere. This is a brow tine area (about 9 yrs.) with record book bulls. Two recent Yellowstone bulls taken went 397 B&C and another over 400 B&C.
Camp is about 1 hour from the road, not a long pack, but far enough to enjoy very little hunting pressure. Normal riding per day is 1/2 to 1 hr. each way (on gentle, high quality horses). We use 10X12 wall tents for every 2 hunters, with cots, pads, wood stove and a large cooking and eating tent with plenty of home cooked food.
RIFLE: Mid October is the opening of rifle season, usually with mild weather. But lots of Elk in the area.
MIGRATION HUNT: By mid November, we're getting deep snow in the high country, so we move down to a private lodge. This is the time for the Yellowstone Migration! We hunt on the main migration route.
SUCCESS: For Elk, the actual rate on Bulls varies from 20-65%. Contributing factors are: weather, hunters ability (under pressure), physical conditioning and mental attitude. CONSIDER THAT BOTH AREAS WE HUNT ARE BRANCH ANTLER-NO SPIKES IN KILL RATIOS!!
OPPORUNITY: That ranges 95-100% on Elk. It's very seldom a hunter doesn't get at least one good chance at a bull; with some getting several chances a day!(I believe attitude plays a part).
