Brilliant Canyon Ranch is located ten miles west of Raton, New Mexico and one mile south of the Colorado state line. The 4000+ acre ranch and 4000 acre adjoining leased property is surrounded by 600,000+ acres of private land, commonly known as Vermejo Park Ranch, which has absolutely no public access. The property is home to a large number of resident elk, deer, bear, and turkey. However, migrating animals continually visit the ranch with its lush green meadows, numerous springs and small lakes. The opportunity to harvest a large, Pope & Young or Boone & Crockett trophy bull elk, deer, or bear is excellent. Elk licenses are guaranteed via private land permits. Other licenses are available over the counter. Catch and release fishing for rainbow trout in the 20-inch class is available during warmer months to all clients at an additional extra charge.
Lodging and meals are provided at Brilliant Canyon Ranch. No more than six hunters will be permitted during any given hunting period. Clients will have his/her own bedroom, with friends sometimes sharing a room, in a large home on the ranch. The homes are nicely furnished with hot running showers and bathtubs, large kitchens and large living room areas. Satellite television and telephone service are also available. Hot breakfasts, lunches, and dinners will be provided each day. Snacks are available at all times. Safety and comfort for each one of our hunters is of the highest concern. If special accommodations or foods are required please notify us ahead of time and Brilliant Canyon Ranch will try to accommodate you in every way.
Employees of Brilliant Canyon Ranch are very friendly, considerate, and knowledgeable in the area of hunting, ranching, and wildlife management. All are successful hunters and have harvested large trophy animals. It is our goal to insure each client a very safe, successful, and memorable hunt. Care of trophy heads, skins, and care of meat is a top priority. We will take every action necessary to preserve your trophy. All meat from animals will be cared for and no meat will be wasted or allowed to spoil. You may donate your meat to another person if so desired. Special arrangements can be made for processing, trophy mounting, hide tanning, or shipment to your home. A handling fee will be added to the actual cost for each task.
Hunting is done mostly on foot via still hunting and stalking. ATVs are sometimes used to reach hunting areas to minimize noise and impact on the land. Pickup trucks will also be used if required.
Both archery and rifle hunts are available for all big game species. Hunting for turkey in the fall is not permitted. Combination hunts are available for elk, deer and bear during the archery season in September. Muzzleloader deer hunts are available in September. Combo hunts for elk and bear are available during the rifle seasons in October. Combination hunts offer the opportunity to bag other trophy species during a hunt, but pay a trophy fee only if another species is harvested. This does imply that the hunter will have a license for that species in possession before the hunt begins.
Spring turkey season runs April 15 - May 10 of each year with a limit of two bearded turkeys per license. These hunts are for three days in duration. The closest commercial airports are Pueblo or Colorado Springs, Colorado. Special arrangements can be made for transportation to and from the ranch if needed. Following are the dates, hunting rates, and licensing costs for the coming year. Please contact us at any time to book a hunt or for any other information you may need.
The ranch has very good populations of resident elk, deer, bears, and turkeys. However, the surrounding area is also heavily populated with these animals, which are continually migrating into and out of the ranch.
