Cougar - Cougar season in Alberta begins December 1 and lasts until the end of February. For the past 14 years, we have enjoyed an exceptional success rate hunting the largest subspecies of cougar in North America. During the hunt we use trucks and snowmobiles to search for a suitable track, and work it out. When we have the cat located, we then pursue it on foot with hounds. Although our average time to harvest a cat is 5-6 days, we like our hunters to book 10 days. This allows us some flexibility for the varying weather conditions that are common at this time of year, and ensures the greatest chance of success.
Spring Black Bear - Spring black bear season runs from late April to early May. This is a spot and stalk hunt in the foothills and Rocky Mountains, in an area with a high percentage of color phase bears. We use horses to explore newly green trails and spend time glassing south facing slopes where bears like to feed after hibernation. Ranch house accommodation is provided. Hunts are 6 days in length. Fall black bear season runs from early September until they den, which is usually early November. The hunting method is much the same as the spring hunt, with the bears feeding primarily on berry covered slopes. This hunt combines well with deer, moose or elk.
Whitetail and Mule Deer - Rifle deer season in our foothill and mountain zone begins in late September. For the early season hunts we will often combine mule deer with black bear, elk or moose. The most productive time to begin hunting whitetails is the last week of October, when they increase their pre-rut activity making their scrapes. This is when we begin to hunt whitetail deer and mule deer together on our popular six-day combination hunt. Whitetail deer can also be combined successfully with moose during this time. The season continues through the rut and until the end of November. For these hunts we will either stay at our wilderness tent camp or take daily trips from our home with the horses and trailer to the trail heads. Hunting in this zone is restricted by a quota, with most of the area accessible only on foot or horseback, further limiting hunting pressure and ensuring good trophy quality.
Moose and Elk - Our rifle elk season begins September 17, during the peak of the rut. We hunt this foothill and mountain zone on horseback and on foot, glassing and calling. We enjoy an excellent opportunity to bugle bulls into close range. This exciting hunt is in a limited entry area with a 6 point minimum (on one antler) rule, which ensures that mature trophy bulls are available. This hunt can be combined with mule deer or black bear, as well. Our rifle moose season begins the following week (September 24) and coincides with the peak of the rut. This hunt is conducted in the same area as our elk hunt and similar hunting methods are used. This hunt can be scheduled to combine mule deer, whitetails or black bear. Our moose are classified as Shiras moose by Safari Club International and as Canada moose by the Boone & Crockett Club. Although 50"+ moose are not uncommon, we consider 45" to be a realistic goal for our hunters.
