Come and enjoy some of the best fishing and most breathtaking scenery you can imagine. The North Channel of Lake Huron has come to be known as the most scenic cruising area in North America, if not the world. Some have compared it to the Greek islands. We have clean water and fish you can eat in a big-water setting that's easy to get lost in. Leave your worries at home and lose yourself in pristine wilderness among the bays and islands of the channel or on the beautiful Spanish River.
If the weather is just too rough in the morning to go out on the big water, there are over 50 kilometres of the Spanish River to fish. This river has been producing some very big walleye lately, there's an ongoing muskie stocking program and bass, pike, perch etc. are abundant. If it's the great northern pike that you seek, well, legend has it that old granddad is still hiding out in the delta somewhere. They claim that on occasion he'll lay right in the shadow of your boat but not less than a 12 footer because the shadow isn't big enough. Now I haven't seen this guy personally but every once in a while an angler comes to the dock with busted gear and a white face. You'll have to figure this one out for yourself......
First Mate is a new company but the crew members have been around for quite some time. Our goal is to ensure that our guests have, not just a fishing trip or vacation, but a truly unique and affordable northern experience. The crew of First Mate are coast guard certified and experienced sailors, cruisers and fishermen.
Our guides are familiar with the North Channel waters and the fishing areas there and up the river too. They may amuse you with local lore as you fish or cruise and you may even hear of the local native legend of the lake monster that gave the Serpent River it's name.
Now I may be a little biased on this but, to my way of thinking, the North Channel has to be one of the premiere fishing holes in the world. If it is native to North American fresh water you'll find it here. There are bass (large and small mouth), muskie, walleye, perch, lake trout and rainbow trout. There are imports like chinook, pink, coho and atlantic salmon. Don't forget brown trout, carp, catfish, whitefish and sturgeon.
I'll guarantee I haven't got them all yet but no matter, there's certainly something here for everyone. The water is big and sometimes rough but you can always run to a quiet bay or behind an island to avoid the rough stuff. When the water is calm and the sun is shining, you can spot a nickel on bottom in 20 feet of water, that's how clear it is.
