Maintaining reputations as two of the best fishing lakes in the country, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley combine together to offer anglers over 3,300 miles of shoreline. Located in the heart of Western Kentucky these sister lakes, which run parallel to one another and are connected by a free-flowing canal, continue to be noted nationwide for their Crappie and Largemouth Bass fishing. With a fishery that is typical of southern mainstream reservoirs, anglers will also find a thriving population of White Bass, Catfish and Bluegill, not to mention the best fishing they'll find anywhere!
KENTUCKY LAKE - Boasting 160,000 acres of water and 2,380 miles of shoreline, Kentucky Lake has earned a reputation among anglers as one of the best fishing lakes in the country. A reputation it maintains, anglers will tell you, by consistently offering worthy catches of Crappie, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. Measuring 184 miles long, Kentucky Lake's traditional headliner species has been Crappie, fish for which this impoundment has held deserved acclaim. The lake's Crappie grow large, individual fish of 2 pounds are common and limit stringers of fish averaging 1.5 pounds are routine. Bass fishing is another hot commodity on this lake which offers an exceptional population of Largemouth Bass. With a remarkable number of them in the 4-7 pound range, anglers will be equally thrilled with the number of trophy size fish that can be found as well. Combine your Largemouth population with a companion population of Smallmouth Bass which also produces a remarkable number of fish up to 5 pounds or larger, and you'll soon understand just how this lake got it's reputation. Include a few other fishing options like Bluegill and Catfish, Sauger and Stripers, and you'll begin to see why Kentucky Lake is considered one of the best fishing lakes in the country.
LAKE BARKLEY - With 1,004 miles of shoreline and nearly 57,920 acres of water at summer pool, Lake Barkley's popularity continues to grow among anglers who enjoy boasting stringers of slab Crappie and "picture perfect" Largemouth. Still considered a young reservoir by many, Lake Barkley offers anglers miles of stumps, flats, flooded brush and underwater structures ideal for the growth of most fish populations. And while this lake is probably best known for it's spring Crappie run, it's no secret among those who have fished the lake that record catches of Bass and game fish can be found year round. Measuring 134 miles in length Lake Barkley is typical of mainstream reservoirs with thriving populations of Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Crappie, Catfish and Bluegill. It should be noted that fishermen are beginning to see a growing number of Smallmouth Bass as well. Anglers who have never fished for White Bass (Stripers) on Lake Barkley have certainly missed some real summer action. Jumps along river drops and flats from Buzzard Rock Marina near mile marker #39.0 past Eddy Creek to Shelly Light at marker #53.0 keep anglers busy. Just imagine over 15 miles of water with fish for the catching. Combine that with an excellent spring Crappie run and trophy size Largemouth and you'll soon see why the popularity of this lake, and it's reputation for being one of the best fishing lakes in the country, continues to grow.
