Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Ontario's Quetico Park make up the largest waterway wilderness in the world. This two million acre area, with its countless connected waterways is a canoeist's paradise. Ely, in fact, is known as "The Canoe Capital of the World." Here you are able to experience the beauty of these glacial carved lakes and pine-covered forests just as the French Voyageurs did hundreds of years ago.
At LaTourell's, our three generations of experience in catering to canoeists allows us to handle the details of planning an adventure into this area we call home. We offer everything from complete outfitting packages, to partial outfitting, to towboat service.
During our pre-trip planning we will discuss your expectations and obtain the necessary travel permits for the area that you decide on. Upon your arrival at our lakeside base, we will go through the fine points of your trip. We will familiarize you with the methods of camping, canoeing, fishing, and cooking. You will be able to hone your canoeing skills at our lakeside base. This information, along with our detailed map routing, will make your canoe trip comfortable and enjoyable. We can also help you with all necessary permits and camping regulations.
Our equipment is the finest available. It is ultralight for fast traveling and easy portaging. This allows you to get to the remote areas quickly and easily. At the same time and most importantly, the equipment is designed for your total comfort. Our top of the line canoes, tents and sleeping gear along with our hearty food menu are important in ensuring this comfort. We at LaTourell's are dedicated to supplying this quality of equipment.
We take pride in our tow boat service. This transportation by boat for you and your equipment can save you a day's paddle by getting your group further into the interior of the wilderness. Our tow service has set the standard in the area.

This area is joined with Ontario's Quetico Park to form a unique wilderness area of more than two million acres that is famous for its countless connected waterways. Our housekeeping cabins allow you to enjoy this wilderness setting within the comfort of our modern accommodations. After spending the day fishing the famous Moose Lake Chain and Basswood Lake, hiking on the excellent trails adjacent to the resort, or canoeing on one of the many surrounding lakes, you'll be able to relax and enjoy the sunset from the deck of your cabin overlooking Moose Lake. Each cabin has a completely equipped kitchen (including microwaves), modern bathrooms and showers, and comfortable bedrooms with all bedding provided.

You'll be fishing with our top-notch boats and motors that you can count on to get you to and from the hot spots. The live bait shop is well stocked with minnows, leeches and night crawlers. The smallmouth bass fishing is rated as world class. These bronze beauties will offer you some of the most spectacular action to be found anywhere. The excellent walleye fishing has always been a drawing point to the area. Northern pike are found in most lakes and the area holds the state record for this species. Lake trout are found in many of the glacial-carved lakes and provide some early and late summer action. These species, as well as others, make for some of the best variety of freshwater fishing in the world.
From our unequaled location as the closest resort and outfitter to Basswood Lake, the BWCA and Quetico, you will have the easiest of access into the heart of this wilderness fishing. Fishing gear should consist of light to medium action rods equipped with 6-12 lb. test line. For those of you in search of some of our monster northern pike, medium gear with 10-15 lb. test works well. Lead head jigs, floating jigs, and hook/sinker rigs all work well for the very productive live bait fishing. Artificials such as topwater baits, crank baits, spoons, and spinners are also effective. Our well equipped tackle and bait shop is available for all of your needs, as is our hands on advice and guide service.
