Medicine Stone Resort and Outposts offers quality drive-in and fly-in fishing opportunities for trophy walleye, northern pike and lake trout. Where else can you have an entire lake all to yourself.

Medicine Stone Resort is located on Upper Medicine Stone Lake, 15 miles west of Red Lake, in Northwestern Ontario. The main resort has the unique opportunity of being secluded, yet still accessible by road (private). The atmosphere very much resembles that of an outpost camp. All of our drive-in and fly-in cabins are light housekeeping cabins. Upper and Lower Medicine Stone Lakes are each 8-10 miles in length, and hold walleye, northern pike and lake trout. From the main walleye fishing resort, guests also have easy access to Big Gordo Lake, Little Cow Lake and 4 Cro Lake.

The drive-in resort will appeal to those looking for convenient access while the fly-in outpost will appeal to those looking for complete isolation and solitude. Trophy walleye, northern pike and lake trout fishing opportunities are equal, regardless of whether guests choose the drive-in resort or fly-in outpost locations.

The Medicine Stone Basin is one of the most rugged and beautiful areas of Northwestern Ontario. The lakes themselves contain a wide variety of structures and depths (up to 120 ft), guaranteeing consistent fishing action year-round. The cool spring fed waters are rich in oxygen, keeping the walleye and lake trout active even in July and August, while the shallow bays and reefs harbour trophy northern pike.

Upper and Lower Medicine Stone Lake derive there names from a unique rock formation believed by the local natives to have unique healing powers. Guests agree that the twin lakes have mystical powers, leaving their visitors enchanted and in awe.

The province of Ontario contains over 61,000 sq. miles of freshwater lakes and rivers. That's enough water to completely cover the state of Illinois. You will find no shortage of lakes to fish, nor will you need to rub elbows or shoulders with other anglers. Our outpost cabins stand alone, so you will have the entire lake all to yourself.

Fall black bear hunting trips are staged from the main drive-in resort or the fly-in outpost located on Trophy Lake. Hunters have the opportunity of seeing black bear in excess of 500 lbs. Our black bear range in colour from light brown to jet black. Our black bear hunting management unit is huge, covering an area that is almost half the size of Rhode Island. The 3rd largest black bear in North America was taken from the Red Lake area (over 750 lbs). Black bear hunting at its best.

Hy-Vee Lake Outpost - Hy-Vee Lake is our most remote outpost location. It is located 32 air miles northwest of Red Lake, near the boundary of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. With its many bays and reefs, Hy-Vee Lake provides an unusual amount of structure and fish habitat. This accounts for the amazing fishery, with walleye being both plentiful and healthy. To ensure that this fishery remains healthy well into the future, we limit the number of guests who are able to stay at Hy-Vee Lake to 36 guests/year.

Kitty Hawk Lake Outpost - Kitty Hawk is our most beautiful outpost, located on a sandy beach straddling Kitty Hawk and Cornpicker Lakes. In addition to extraordinary walleye and northern pike fishing, guests at Kitty Hawk Outpost also have the opportunity to fish lake trout, a special treat. Kitty Hawk Outpost is located 28 air miles northeast of Red Lake (just south of Hy-Vee Lake), near the boundary of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.To ensure that this fishery remains healthy well into the future, we also limit the number of guests who are able to stay at Kitty Hawk Lake to 36 guests/year.

Trophy Lake Outpost - Trophy Lake Outpost provides anglers with unparalleled northern pike fishing. Fishermen on Trophy Lake itself will literally need to put their rod down to give their arms a rest. Nearby Insect Lake will yield fewer fish, but the average size will be much larger (expect a few trophies to be taken). While Clear Lake and Lower Bug Lake will provide a variety of fish from all types of year classes.

BLACK BEAR HUNTING:

Medicine Stone Resort and Outposts operates bear hunts from our resort at Medicine Stone Lake where we take a maximum of 12 bear hunters each Fall.

At Medicine Stone Resort and Outposts we start baiting each of our 16 Bait location on August 1. This gives us a full three weeks of pre-baiting before our first hunting groups arrive. We will only take a maximum of six bear hunters per week to ensure that each hunter has many choices of active areas for him to choose from. We do cater to Bow hunters and some of our areas lend themselves to this type hunting quite well. You should specify well in advance if you are a bow or rifle hunter.

One item which I make sure all of our hunters are well aware of, is our policy on wounded animals. If you do happen to wound a bear we will track it as long and as far as we are able, as well as using tracking dogs to find your bear. I expect all of our hunters to be MUCH better than the average shot with either rifle or Archery. You will find that your average shooting distance will be about 25 yards. In this range there is no excuse for a missed bear. My philosophy is that if you are unsure of hitting your target animal DO NOT shoot.

If you wound a bear and we do not find it through tracking you must consider that your hunt has been fulfilled and the hunting completed. You can fish as much as you wish or videotape animals coming in to the bait stations, but your hunting is completed. We will hopefully provide you with a good clean opportunity to take a trophy animal, but, if you wound an animal regardless of the reason, consider your hunt completed. No exceptions.

You will find that the average Black bear in our area will weigh about 275 pounds and about five percent of the bears will be a color phase of brown. This will be from cinnamon to chocolate brown. Although we have had excellent success early in the season everything depends on the first heavy frosts that normally come in late August. To make an exceptional hunt you do need the frost to knock the berries down and then the bear will frequent the bait stations on a more regular basis.

Most of your successful hunting will be carried out between 4:00 P.M. and dusk as our past records show this is the time frame in which 90% of our bears have been taken. Medicine Stone Resort and Outposts provides ripened meat scraps and molasses for bait but if people prefer day old pastries they will have to provide those themselves.
