The big walleyes may be the stars of the show, but they don’t always outshine the terrific pike action and a growing smallmouth fishery. For rod bent action, its hard to beat a spoon, a weed bed, and a pack of pike. Those willing to fight their way through the hordes of 25-30 inch fish can expect to eventually be rewarded with a 34-40 inch "gator". We catch and release a few pike every year that eclipse the magical 20 lb. mark, but they aren’t easy and they aren’t nearly as common as our trophy walleye.
Fifteen years ago you didn’t see a smallmouth, 10 years ago you caught a few by accident, and today there are times and places to plan an afternoon smallmouth fishing. Tough as always, these bruisers put up a great fight. The biggest Silver Water Wheel Lodge has seen to date have pushed past the 5 1/2 lb. mark.
To get the most out of this incredible fishery, Silver Water Wheel Lodge suggests you consult with your guides. They are on the lake every day. They know the water and they study the environmental factors that affect fish movement, location, and behavior. Knowing the pulse of the system that week, they can explain the options and the choice is yours. Whether your group is a family looking for lots of action or you are with a bunch of die-hard trophy hunters, your guides will plan the day in accordance with your expectations and wishes.
Lac Seul has earned the reputation of being the finest trophy walleye fishery in Northwest Ontario and is arguably one of the best in the world. The average walleye is an honest 18 to 21 inch fish (2-3 lb.), walleyes at 25 to 26 inches (5-6 lb.) are a daily occurrence, 28 to 30 inch fish (9-10 lb.) are caught every week, and each year we see several fish over the 30 inch mark.
The Ear Falls Power Dam built in the 1930s increased the lake level by 25 ft. and changed the landscape from a series of interconnected lakes and streams into the sprawling body of water we now know as Lac Seul. With nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline and a surface area over 500 square miles, it is the second largest body of water in Ontario. This immense size is one of the critical factors necessary to produce numbers of giant walleyes. The diversity of habitat and abundance and diversity of nutritious forage all combine to create the recipe required to support and maintain numbers of trophy walleyes. (see the included article "The Lac Seul Difference" for more details.)
Lac Seul is also one of the most frequently studied lakes in Northwest Ontario. The information gathered from research has been used to develop one of the first comprehensive fishery management plans in the Province. The ultimate goal of which is to insure that game fish populations (especially trophy fish) are maintained for the future, if not improved. The conservation policies and management plan not only helped build the trophy fishery we now enjoy, but they are also the insurance policy for the future.
