Canada Fishing Trips - Ontario Resorts - Walleye-Fishing, Northern Pike-Fishing and Lake Trout-Fishing. Sydney Lake is located in both Woodland Caribou Wilderness Park and Trophy Waters. A true wilderness setting where nature and wildlife live in peace and quiet as witnessed by the nesting areas of the great Bald Eagle, Osprey, Blue Heron, Ducks and Loons. Moose, Black Bear, Deer and Beaver range through the forest and lakeshores. We are situated on the north shore facing south at the midway point with a tremendous view of our beautiful expansive lake. On the Sturgeon River/Lake System, it connects with Kilburn Lake to the northwest and Rowdy Lake to the southwest. Seven lakeshore guest cabins accommodating no more than 40 persons are available for you to enjoy the Canadian wilderness experience.

Woodland Caribou Wilderness Provincial Park - located in Sunset Country, covers over 450 000 hectares from Red Lake in the east to the Manitoba border in the west. Rowdy Lake in the south to Musclow Lake in the north. Home to one of the largest herds of woodland caribou south of Hudson Bay, this rugged arctic watershed, once traveled by fur traders, has abundant wildlife, ancient pictographs, and lakes and streams seldom traveled, rarely fished.

Woodland Caribou Wilderness Provincial Park - located in Northwest Ontario's Sunset Country, covers over 450 000 hectares from Red Lake in the east to the Manitoba border in the west. Rowdy Lake in the south to Musclow Lake in the north. Home to one of the largest herds of caribou south of Hudson Bay, this rugged arctic watershed, once traveled by fur traders, has abundant wildlife, ancient pictographs, and lakes and streams seldom traveled, rarely fished. Sydney and Kilburn lakes are located in the south. Wildlife abounds here and multiple sightings of a variety of species are common.

Trophy Waters - located from Sydney Lake in the north to the English river in the south and west to the Manitoba border, covers about 300 000 hectares. A one of a kind fishing area, this is a special area to keep the waters teeming with fish - big fish. Lead by Tourist operators - Government, Native Groups, Logging Interests, Tourism, and Citizens Groups combined to form an agreement protecting the great resource of this incredible fishery. Conservation limits of smaller fish are still kept to make a fresh enjoyable meal. With all of the large fish returned in this area since 2000, all the trophy fish that have been caught in the previous three years are still there, and they are bigger. This has been the pinnacle of a conservation effort in the area going back over 25 years.

At Sydney Lake Lodge we feel that the future of our fantastic fisheries is in our hands. Sydney Lake is part of a protected special conservation area, Ontario's Trophy Waters. All over slot sized fish are returned to the water to grow and reproduce. Smaller sized fish can be kept for shore lunch or dinner. We are located on exclusive waters (Sydney and Kilburn Lakes), there are no other resorts here, no towns - we are secluded and remote. Sydney Lake is a deep lake with a large volume, it also has many shallow bays which are highly productive for fish reproduction. Kilburn Lake is mainly shallow and has one deep bay. The number one claim by our guests who have fished elsewhere, is that the best angling they have ever had is at Sydney Lake - and we intend to keep it this way.

Fisheries analysis have shown that large fish are old. Their genetic ecosystem must be protected for spawning stock. For this reason we request you release larger fish so that they can fight again, a replica fish is an excellent way to preserve your memory.

Careful release of fish is very important, survival rate is determined by the length of time that they are out of the water. Fish on stringers should not be released, studies show an 85% death rate. To ensure the healthy release of fish barb less hooks/lures (flattened barbs) are requested for the 2003 season. Thank you for your participation you will enjoy the results.

FISH SPECIES PRESENT - Lake trout, yellow pickerel (walleye), northern pike, lake whitefish, lake herring, burbot, white sucker, blacknose shiner, spottail shiner, bluntnose minnow, fathead minnow, minespine stickleback, trout perch, and iowa darter.

LAKE CHARACTERISTICS - Sydney Lake is a Large, deep, cold water lake with a littoral zone covering forty percent of the area and providing habitat for both cold and warm water fish. Thermal stratification was evident at the time of the survey. water temperatures ranged between 70`F. and 45`F. in the upper one hundred feet of water. The ten degree temperature drop (63`F. to 53`F.) between the twenty five and thirty five foot depths identified the thermocline, the layer of water in which there was the most rapid decrease in temperature. The dissolved oxygen content varied very little to the depth of one hundred and twenty five feet, and ranged between 9.4 and 10.0 parts per million. A surface 7.6 pH value showed an alkaline characteristic, in relation to the hydrogen ion composition in the water. A total dissolved solids concentration of 16 parts per million was determined from a surface conductivity reading. Light penetration in this colorless water was indicated by the disappearance of a secchi disc, from view, 26.0 feet below the water surface.
